Igniting Engagement

Igniting Engagement

The Engagement Landscape

87% of the global workforce is disengaged, according to Gallup’s 142-country survey, State of the Global Workplace, and this figure doesn’t look like changing any time soon. Why is that a problem? Disengagement means increased absenteeism, error rates, anxiety and depression and decreased productivity, profitability and share value.

The same survey found that companies with highly engaged workforces outperform their peers by 147% in earnings per share, so the question you have to ask yourself is, “Is there a disengagement problem in my company, and if so, why are we letting it continue?”

Does Anything Work?

Countless myths abound about engagement, the chief of which is the idea that it can be raised by purely external, or environmental, means. This, ironically, is the approach many companies take when trying to raise engagement levels. People wrongly assume that by changing the environment, things will magically get better.

This is a tragic, but avoidable, category mistake, and stems from the misunderstanding that assumes engagement is extrinsic, not intrinsic, where in fact the opposite is true: real engagement comes from within, and must be ignited.

This is why providing a staff table tennis table, introducing flexible work hours, and providing free hot beverages for employees will only get you so far: these may be humane (if costly) perks but they cannot, in and of themselves, change an individual. Authentic change is inside out, not outside in.

Igniting Engagement

Of course, it is possible to raise levels of engagement and enact lasting change, when you when you know how best to approach the problem. At Authentic Business, we understand that the most effective remedy for disengagement is to treat engagement as a belief system.

Beliefs drive behaviour, and behaviour reinforces beliefs. This means that by changing internal beliefs we can increase engagement levels, and in turn guarantee higher productivity and better performance, without having you spend a fortune on external, environmental factors.

We do this by helping people discover what makes them tick – what fulfils and engages them. We work with individuals to raise self-awareness and consciousness, so that they can apply their newfound understanding of what uniquely engages them to their work. Even better, we also do this on a team-level, so that your entire organisation can experience transformation from within.
